One of my favorite films is the 1945 movie The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, not least because it opens with a terrific scene of British Army dispatch riders in action on their motorcycles. Note, in this brief clip from the 2002 Criterion Collection restoration, the rider who delivers the message is referred to as a "Don-R" — military speak for Dispatch Rider. It's exciting: it makes you want to buy a Royal Enfield Military and spash through country lanes. View the film clip above, then read all about the making of the movie.
