Is this what the new Royal Enfield twin will look like?

We can only hope the new Royal Enfield twin looks as good as this.
Reader John Donlon of Illinois is passionate about the long-awaited Royal Enfield twin. Recent "spy" photos of the new motorcycle only whet his appetite.

John pointed me to the recent video shot in India of a rider on what may be a Royal Enfield Continental GT with twin exhausts. The words "Royal Enfield" appear on the rider's collar, to make sure we get the message.

"I still think there is another version most likely floating around the UK, in classic Interceptor livery which hasn't broken cover yet. I'm sure there will be more sightings in the coming weeks," John writes.

Latest "spy shot" with carefully
labelled "Royal Enfield" rider.
But never mind the fuzzy photos being released to tease us. John thinks he knows what the new Royal Enfield twin may look like, in final form.

It will look the the Series 3 Interceptor put together by Hitchcocks Motorcycles.

This is a tribute motorcycle, assembled around one of the 800cc parallel twin motors Royal Enfield of England built as  prototypes but never got into production. Hitchcocks acquired the motor in parts and originally had it assembled it into a vintage twin frame "just to keep it together."

That Series 3 motor, derived from the wet-sump Series 2 Interceptor motor of 1970, presumably wouldn't suit the requirements of 2017. But a more modern design, retaining retro cues such as a long stroke, would be a fantastic calling card for Royal Enfield of India.

"I honestly think they are going to release two or three bikes with the twin: the Continental GT 750; the Interceptor, and possibly a Constellation.  Aside from the extended double down-tube frames, they already have all the other parts in production," John writes.

"Now it's crunch time and Sid (CEO Siddhartha Lal) and his buddies are going to have to hustle up their game.  They CAN do it.  At this stage it is far more a matter of will than cash.

"I want an Interceptor in my garage — soon!"
