Royal Enfield celebrates Independence Day

Royal Enfield motorcycles owe their continued production to India's military, which purchased such big numbers that a factory in Chennai began building the 1955 British motorcycle. It never stopped.

Until the last few years, the design changed very little and the motorcycles continue to serve India's police and military.

These units can be counted on to show off their skill with the motorcycles, as seen here, during a rehearsal for the Indian Independence Day parade in Srinagar, India. The police officers are members of the Jammu Kashmir police.

India celebrates its 1947 independence from British colonial rule today, Aug. 15. This photo is by Mukhtar Khan and was distributed through the Associated Press. It was considered remarkable enough to show up on the front of The South Florida Sun-Sentinel web site.
